Heat Pump Installations Reach New Milestone
By September 2024, the UK surpassed last year’s total of 40,426 certified heat pump installations, recording over 42,000 installations. This impressive 39% increase in average monthly installations compared to 2023 highlights the nation’s growing commitment to sustainable home heating. As of now, the UK boasts nearly 260,000 certified heat pump installations, a significant step toward the government’s goal of 600,000 installations per year by 2028.
How Government Incentives are Driving Growth
The surge in heat pump adoption has been fuelled by supportive government schemes like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). This program offers homeowners grants of up to £7,500 for MCS-certified heat pump installations. In August 2024 alone, BUS applications more than doubled compared to August 2023, with 2,890 applications submitted. To support this growing interest, Ofgem has increased the funding limit to £200 million by authorising the allocation of up to £50 million in additional grant vouchers.

MCS CEO Ian Rippin praised the rise in installations, stating, “It’s great to see more consumers across the UK making the switch to heat pumps for their home heating needs. There’s still progress to be made to reach the government target of 600,000 installations per year by 2028, but MCS certification will play a key role in driving further adoption, by ensuring everyone has confidence in the quality, safety, and performance of their heat pump installations.”
